The HOSA club at SHS hosted an Act Out Loud Community Traffic Safety Event on Saturday April 5, 2014. The community traffic safety event was supposed to begin on Thursday with a mock crash, followed by a “Ghost Out” and M.A.D.D. assembly on Friday. We invited all the High Schools in the county along with Pleasant View Christian School to attend the three day event. On Wednesday we had a several severe storms move into the area followed by a couple of days of rain and then the temperature dropped into the mid 40’s. We had to postpone the mock crash and the “Ghost Out” due to the weather. We decided to continue with the Traffic Safety Event on Saturday despite the cold weather. We had several events scheduled for the day: Ashland City Fire Department Child Safety Seat Check, Ashland City Police Department SIDNE DUI cart, Dickson County DUI Simulator, Crossville Police Department Seat Belt Convincer, Cheatham County EMS medic unit, Cheatham County EMA chemical response trailer, Pleasant View Volunteer Fire Department Sprinkler/ Fire suppression trailer, PVVFD Severe weather / fire simulation trailer, TN Meth task force methamphetamine display trailer, TN Army National Guard, M.A.D.D., TN Operation Lifesaver display, All State Insurance Company, Fatal Vision DUI Corn Hole exhibit, face painting, and Hope Clinic parent workshop. This was the first time that we have ever had this type of event in our community or at the school. The turnout wasn’t as good as we had hoped. We were competing with a 5K run and the final weekend for recreational soccer tournaments. There were about 175 students and 75-100 adults that attended. We did have several community members and some students attend from another county high school that saw Twitter posts about the event. We ran the event in both of the local news papers, kids posted on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and we had signs posted at several local businesses and banks. There was also a school reach sent home to all students. We hope to continue this event in the future.
